Botox® is a type of “neuromodulator” or “neurotoxin.” When injected into precise facial points, the active ingredient in Botox® disrupts the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. These muscle contractions are responsible for those pesky “expression lines.” In firm and highly elastic skin, crow’s feet and frown lines are dynamic and only appear when squinting, frowning, worrying, or otherwise making a facial expression. Over time, as the skin loses its structural supports, such as firming collagen and flexible elastin, tissues don’t bounce back after the expression is made. They remain permanent fixtures of the face. 

All neuromodulators generally work best to treat lines, wrinkles, and folds in the upper third portion of the face. Another type of injectable treatment, “dermal fillers,” is primarily indicated to treat folds and volume loss in the mid- and lower- parts of the face, for instance, the smile and marionette lines around the nose and mouth. When combined, Botox® and dermal fillers can provide a nonsurgical or “liquid facelift” alternative to more aggressive and invasive surgical procedures.
